1 Kings

Editor's Notes The book of 1 Kings provides an account of the death of David, the reign of his son Solomon, and the decline and division of the Kingdom of Israel after Solomon and many of his successors turned to idol worship. It also recounts the ministry of the prophet Elijah among the northern ten tribes of Israel.

The Old Testament book of 1 Kings serves as a historical record, detailing significant events in the history of ancient Israel. Specifically, it begins by chronicling the death of King David, a pivotal figure in Israelite history. Following David’s passing, the narrative shifts its focus to the reign of his son, Solomon, who inherited the throne and ruled over a united kingdom.

The book elaborates on Solomon’s leadership, his wisdom, and the prosperity that characterized his time as king. However, 1 Kings doesn’t solely focus on the positive aspects of Israel’s history. It also provides an account of the kingdom’s decline and eventual division, which occurred after Solomon’s death. This decline is attributed, in large part, to Solomon himself and many of the kings who succeeded him, as they deviated from the worship of Yahweh and turned to the worship of idols.

This shift towards idolatry had profound consequences for the kingdom. In addition to the political and religious narrative, the book of 1 Kings also recounts the important ministry of the prophet Elijah. Elijah’s prophetic work was primarily directed towards the northern ten tribes of Israel, who had largely abandoned the covenant with God. The book details Elijah’s efforts to call them back to faithfulness and his confrontations with those who promoted idol worship.
